Assignmentised!

howistudyApproximately two minutes ago (11:54p.m.), I finished my Language assignment that’s due tomorrow. It was about teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) students, and I had to analyse a text type, write a case study and describe how I would cater for that learner in my classroom, all inside 1500 words. I actually enjoyed writing it, and here’s the thing… I didn’t start working on it until 10 this morning (don’t tell my lecturers). Now that I’ve finished, I’m riding on quite a high… it isn’t just ‘finally finished’ euphoria, though. I completed a bigger, harder assignment last Sunday, and probably did a better job of it, but all I felt then was completely worn out. I think my jubilation can be directly attributed to finishing it inside a day, the day before it’s due. It’s something that I used to do regularly, and experience this same sense of satisfaction. Since second semester last year I’ve been more responsible and given myself a week or so to finish off an assignment – and I’ve discovered that the result is more stress, less fulfilment and no better marks. Although, having four assignments due on the same day in October means I’ll probably be back on that road before this semester’s done.

My most outstanding memory of first year involves our fearless, awe-inspiring lecturer telling us not to do the assignment the night before – she could always tell which ones were, and she wouldn’t react favourably. I didn’t really give a toss, and I did it the night before anyway… Three weeks later I had a sparkling High Distinction in my hand, and a smirk on my face that it took at least a day to get rid of. Just goes to show that one shouldn’t boast to one’s students without being prepared to be wrong!

This is all for today, because my brain and my fingers are threatening mutiny if I don’t stop typing!

I am continuously pressed for time, struggling to meet deadlines. There is nothing like having the audacity to embark on an assignment one night before and complete it, up to standard, within hours.
