Define ‘Tech’…
If I’ve learned one thing this year in EPC35..whatever the tech/ICT unit number is, it’s that ‘Technology’ has many and varied meanings. I’ve decided to manipulate that to my benefit tonight. The definition of Tech that I accept this evening is one that describes things that are changing, improving – things that are designed and created for a specific purpose. My Ensign camera falls nicely into that category! In fact, it’s a wonderful example of 1950′s technology. Right now, it’s sitting photogenically on top of my bookcase – which is just about the only tidy surface in my room. First job tomorrow: cleaning this place up! Second job: getting my SVR assignment – the last one for the semester! – finished. Wish me luck

You cheated!

Ha ha as soon as I saw that you were doing Tech my first thought was “I wonder how long it will take her to take a photo of her cool old camera!”

The word technology is normally used to represent current technology, which today is also know as Digital Technology. What you’ve take a photo of there is Analogue Technology, while i am a fan of the old film, (i much prefer the old film photos from my Pentax P20) it doesn’t really fit in with the “Tech” the teacher would be talking about in an education class, as the students should be focused on using current technology, looking back at old technology, and theorizing about future technology.
The end of my short rant to prove that i do look at all your blogs :p

actually, in one of my ‘tech’ classes we spent a three hour lesson looking at old cameras. the definition I provided is the one the teacher accepted as tech. You do design and technology in high school… it’s not about designing computers or cameras, is it? it’s the process and the creation.
dictionary definition for technology:
–noun
1. the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.
2. the terminology of an art, science, etc.; technical nomenclature.
3. a technological process, invention, method, or the like.
4. the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization.
that doesn’t even begin to mention computers or digital hardware in ANY way.

I would just like to quote Adam:
“What you’ve take a photo of there is Analogue Technology”
Please note the last word, technology. The deal between Anna and Daniel never stated CURRENT technology, it was also not limited to technology that would be taught in a classroom today, although Anna seems to of debunked that argument.
Just because it is no longer current does that mean that it is no longer defined as technology? Does this mean that my very first brick of a mobile phone is no longer defined as technology? Where do you draw the line?
Well that is my two cents worth anyway!

Anna, you said there was a debate going on here!!! That seemed to imply Adam and Dan had legitimate reasoning…. which they don’t, cos that camera is technology. Man, look at Steam-Punk for fictional examples Adam, I see nothing in there that’s digital (…which is the point…). Also you saying technology has only existed for fifty years… the dude that made the steam train wants to punch you in the face. Also the dude or dudette who made the stone wheel.

PS. This is my fav pic so far anna!!! Is that in our house? I lvoe the candles and bottles.

Ok i was going for the social implication of the word technology, which i think when people n every day conversations talk about how good technology is, are talking about current technology.
You know i knew the next post would have the dictionary, although i though claire would post it.
“The term is often used to imply a specific field of technology, or to refer to high technology or just consumer electronics, rather than technology as a whole.” Wikipedia from the definition of technology
And andrew, stop relating everything to weird anime things that only you watch, plus i never stated anywhere in my post that technology only went back 50 years.
ok technology in google
1. Technology wikipedia description
2. “And a technology pgrade could allow the routers to take on even more tasks”
3. “Features and columnists from the newspaper are supplemented with breaking news from CNet, Reuters and AP”
4. “Find information about the latest advances in technology at CNN. CNN Technology news and video covers the internet, business and personal tech, video games”
5. “MIT’s magazine about innovation, with online articles on specific technologies and a focus on the process by which new technology gets out”
6. “Latest technology news, comment and analysis from the Guardian, the world’s leading liberal voice.
7. “Technology news, trends, and breakthroughs – The Globe and Mail”
8. “PhysOrg.com provides the latest news on technology, software, computer science, internet, semiconductor, telecom and science technology.”
9. Top Technology News, Videos and Images as voted on by the Digg community. Latest news on Apple, Design, Gadgets and more.”
10. “Read the latest technology news about computers, software, consumer electronics, the Internet, and wireless technology. Find product reviews on new tech”
What i am trying to say is the general consensus today is that when you say the word technology your talking about current or new technology!
October 20th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
…Andrew’s weird anime? SteamPunk isn’t anime. SteamPunk is absolutely awesome!! just in case you missed it, here’s my post about it… http://irelle.ii-blog.com/?p=435
Also, I acknowledge your point. My original thought is usually of high-end digital technology, although older people i’ve asked tend to think of technology as advances in medicine, science, etc. I was really just proving that although I may have bent the rules slightly, I was still within my rights !
October 20th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
Well, it’s not in *our* house, but it’s in mine! =P
It’s on the top of my bookcase, and I love them too! heh.
October 20th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Sorry, im just a little annoyed at andrew at telling i had no point, i dont tell him how to be a journalist, so he shouldn’t get to tell me what technology is, seeing as it is what im doing at uni!!!!
October 20th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
while i agree that a camera is technology, it doesn’t fit the general societal norms of what technology is today! that is my point!
October 20th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
BTW: THIS WAS MY 100TH POST AT THIS ADDRESS!!! EXCITING!!
October 20th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
And yet a Digital camera is hailed as the very latest technology. heh, odd’s fish.
October 20th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Wel I’m annoyed with your stubbornness that goes beyond reason, “The term is often used to imply a specific field of technology, or to refer to high technology or just consumer electronics, rather than technology as a whole.” You proved Anna and I’s point, it states “The term is often used to imply a specific field of technology or…” HEEEELLLLOO! Way to prove my point.
50 years is a rough guessetimate of the electronic computer. I’ll save you doing the twatty work youself, and get the wikipedia quotes, “Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945).” Your speech on electronic technology and people who all “apparently” think that tech is electronic/digital spew, is why I said 50 years, turns out it’s 65-69 years, fucking sue me for being 15-19 years off a general statement which still manages to make its point across about technology existing before the electronic computer. The term technolgy has been around before then! You’re the one shitting on the history, culture and advancements of generations before you with this ignorant argument which holds the weakest of merits because Anna used the term correctly. But then if you want to continue being one of those ignorant people who think technolgy exists only with “electronic” fine with me, just do it with other disrespectful shitters on history.
Also before you take your attack on me about the anime shit, learn some culture and realise steampunk has existed for years in NUMEROUS MEDIUMS, if you can be in wikipedia to pull quotes to prove me right about the term technology, then look up steampunk while you’re there.

“Sorry, im just a little annoyed at andrew at telling i had no point, i dont tell him how to be a journalist, so he shouldn’t get to tell me what technology is, seeing as it is what im doing at uni!!!!”
Speaking of that, what the hell do you think a journalists job is?!?!?! …now, really… Also I will tell you what technology is if you think it only existed since the electronic/digital era…. That’s just embarrassing. for everyone.
October 21st, 2009 at 4:29 pm
YAWN battle of the stubborn, and i really can’t be bothered fighting it, cause i know andrews more stubborn than me
October 21st, 2009 at 6:27 pm
heh, I may be stubborn, but least I’m correct when I am. And passive-agressive answers such as the one you gave then usually means you’ve been proven wrong but fail to acknowledge or own up to the facts of reality. Good luck with that.
October 21st, 2009 at 6:55 pm
okay. Official time out, guys. Topic is closed.
October 22nd, 2009 at 1:20 am
no im still right
October 22nd, 2009 at 12:09 pm
LOL, yeah, right at being wrong. But you’ve now gone into “yes.no.yes.no” with zero facts, and the fact is technology as a term existed before computers, and many people such as Anna, Claire and I use it correctly to refer to things not digital/electronic, AND seeing as how the tally so far on the message board is 3-2, with you on the lower side, It seems to be completely clear that people DO indeed use to to refer to other tech! but please do act like an ingorant child, it is not embarrassing at all.
I’ll save you wasting your time with a rebuttal; “Well Andrew, least i’m not acting like an obnoxious dick [well we both are so point is moot], and yes, no, yes, no, yes, no, I’m still right cos I said so.”
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:15 pm
well you are acting like an obnoxious dick, plus IM NOT SAYING TECHNOLOGY DIDN”T EXIST BEFORE THE ANALOG CAMERA, IM SAY TECHNOLOGY AS A TERM IS “MORE COMMONLY” USED TO REFER TO THE “CURRENT” TECHNOLOGY, WHICH AN ANALOGUE CAMERA ISN’T, cause like you said its about 50 years old. plus the 7 people that read these couple of blogs arn’t a fair cluster of the population BECAUSE MOST OF YOU ARE CRAZY ART NUTS!
“This would be the point where you get all defensive of me being agressive just like last time we got into an argument” This is why i was saying i cant be bother with fighting with you, not because i subconsciously think your right but because i just dont CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:54 pm
HEY, leave me out of your litte bickering match. All I did was start it.
But I would smugly like to point out that the number of people who read my blog is closer to 50 than ‘about 7′. in fact, the average number of views per day I’ve had this month is 53.
So, nyer.
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:12 pm
…well I nothing else to add, cos you’ve gone and acted like typical adam. And to be honest, I assumed the argument was staying in this forum, only place I’m annoyed. Maybe you need thicker skin if you’re so offended about being wrong when correcting someone on their use and definition of tech… just saying.
And I’m done. lol.
October 24th, 2009 at 12:18 am
No its surpased the forum, because you’ve said thing here that were hurtful to me, and i need some time away from you.
And thats me done
