Happy V-Day

N’aww, a corny hand-heart!

So, how many people did you love today? Opinion is very divided about Valentine’s day. On one hand, it’s a Hallmark holiday – something manufactured by companies to make you buy more stuff to give to people in that slow period between Christmas and Easter. What’s romantic about consumerism… amIright?

On the other hand – somewhere, amongst the chocolates and roses and romantic candlelit dinners for two – is the ‘real’ meaning of Valentine’s. After all, it all boils down to demonstrating your love for someone, making a physical gesture to make them (and you) feel special. Scholars from the first school of thought (the Hallmark holidayers) argue at this point that they don’t need a designated day to show their love for someone… that the other 364 days of the year are just as important in a relationship, and that if you need a box of chocolates to show you love someone, you’re a phony. To those people I say this: baloney. Every relationship – yes, even the one you have with your parents and your best friend – needs times when a little extra effort is put in, and little surprises or tokens of affection pop up. That’s what helps keep those relationships happy and healthy. If that boost is prompted a little by a set day of the year, so much the better. Make the most of Valentine’s day, people: a little romance never hurt anyone.
