How To Leave a Comment

This is for all of you out there who read anyone’s blog: Don’t be offended, it’s not a direct attack at you for not commenting on my blog, I’m quite satisfied with the occasional titbit. Just felt like being instructional. ^.^

First step: read the blog entry, even if it is only skimming through a long post. If you’re reading a friend’s blog, they deserve to know you’ve at least made a minor effort to recognise the work you’ve put in. You’re bound to find something that jumps out at you as good, bad, interesting or contestable. It doesn’t have to be in the writing – it may be the style of writing, a funny use of a word, or in the picture. Remember that thing.

Next: locate the comment box. It’s usually right there at the bottom of a post, but sometimes you have to click the link that says ‘Leave a comment’ or something similar. Not that hard to find.

Then: type in your comment. Talk about the one small thing you found when you were reading the blog, or talk about your reaction to the post in general. Does it trigger any memories? Any emotions? Any inside jokes? Did it make you :-) or :-( ? A comment can be less than ten words and still make the author feel appreciated – or if something really pushed your buttons, get a little wordy!

Remember: if you have your own blog, or post anything on Facebook, Flickr… anywhere feedback can be given, you probably love the feeling of knowing someone has viewed your work and valued it enough to leave a comment. You can’t figure out who you’re reaching and how they’re reacting unless they actually let you know, which isn’t exactly an incentive to keep posting, is it? Added bonus: if you comment on someone else, they’ll probably be back to comment on you.

Note: no comments required for this post. =P
