My Top Ten Christmas Playlist

There are some songs and carols that simply must be played at Christmas time. I think my strongest memory from this year’s silly season might just turn out to be driving along the road to Bishopsbourne with Kyle and Dan, singing carols and trying to remember all the words. We did a very passable version of the first verse of Silent Night, too! Anyway, here’s my top ten Christmas songs for 2009 (in no particular order):

1. All I Want for Christmas is You – Mariah Carey.

Lisa decided to make this her official Christmas song this year, and I must agree that it’s one I simply have to hum along to whenever I walk into a shop and hear it.

2. Winter Wonderland – Patti LaBelle.

I know, I know… it’s summer. And even in winter we don’t get snowy whiteouts! But this year, this song makes me smile every time I hear it – because barbeques and swimming pools make a much better Christmas, in my mind! And Patti LaBelle’s version is just so darn upbeat!

3. When a Child Born – Brook Benton.

A little bit of Christmas story, without ever mentioning Christmas. I love the message of peace and love in this little song.

4. I’ll Be Home for Christmas – Bing Crosby.

Yeah, I’ve got the golden oldies vibe going. This one is just a bit of old-fashioned sentimentality, which is always good!

5.Disco Christmas in Hamster Land – Parry Gripp.

Because it is ABSOLUTELY adorable, totally danceable and very catchy! Even if you ignore everything else on this list, you MUST watch this! See it on YouTube or go here to download it!

6. THIS version of The 12 Days of Christmas.

…Why not? The animation is fantastic, too!

7. Mistletoe and Holly – Frank Sinatra

It’s been quite a few years since anyone has managed to include the words “Oh by gosh, by golly” in a song successfully!

8. Jingle Bell Rock – Bobby Sherman

What a bright time, it’s the right time, to rock the night away!

9. Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee

I don’t know how this song waited this long to get onto the list! I’ve had it stuck in my head since about the middle of November, but I still don’t know all the words. I just love “you will get a sentimental feeling when you hear/voices singing “Let’s be jolly/deck the halls with boughs of holly”’ – Absolute Christmas smiles, guaranteed!

10.  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Who doesn’t love singing along to this song, doing the crazy voices and the (not so) funny asides? I loved this one as a kid, and now I love singing it with Heidi and Alice.

What’s your favourite seasonal song? Is there something I’ve never heard but really should before it’s too late and I have to wait for next December? Let me know!
