Of Weddings

Ever since I was about ten I’ve spent random moments of time planning my wedding. It’s not some weird, prolonged obsession; it’s just one of the things that I daydream about from time to time. I like having things to match and select… I also have my dream house planned from the ground up. It’s not about the having or the wanting – ‘one day’ is fine by me – I just love joining everything together, choosing my favourite things and putting them all together in one place. It’s the same way of thinking that makes me spend three hours arranging the books on my bookcase, and love every minute of it. It’s what makes me get a perfect moment of happiness from an eclectic collection of candles or putting the turtle in the bathroom on just the right angle, or matching my pillow cases perfectly to my sheets.

Naturally, my tastes have changed since I was ten (well, marginally). I can remember deciding when I wasn’t very old that the clearing left of the car park at Lilydale falls would be perfect for a day-time autumn wedding, with a traditional white meringue-y dress and a white, yellow and gold theme. I’ve since grown to dislike both meringue-y dresses and gold as a colour – and also the little clearing. I still like autumn, though.

I also went through a medieval stage, with vague ideas of an ivory and gold dress, complete with embroidered bodice, bell skirt and trailing sleeves – another idea that fitted nicely into an autumn scheme, along with the classic white rose bouquet and claret-red finishing touches to the rest of the wedding party, and an evening wedding.

My current wedding is set on a beach in the early morning. Not entirely practical for the family, but you get that. The dress is white, tiered from a halter-necked, empire-styled bodice, and long enough to scrape the sand. Shoes – either white sandals or disregarded entirely. The dress also features some floral embroidery on the skirt, mostly at the hem, and not filled in, just line work – in rainbow colours. The groom can wear a white shirt, no tie, and trousers of some description. Bouquet – gerberas. Bridesmaid – probably in a dress similar to mine, not as long, and with a coloured scarf sash or something. Everything else – depends on what kind of mood I’m in. Some days it’s orange and purple, others it’s blue and green. Probably paper-bag brown and white.

… Of course, the other roles (including the groom) are filled by whoever happens to be closest at the time, or just not filled at all. I just like mentally creating invitations and place settings and clothes and picking out rings and menus. I can probably have a wedding all by myself if I need to. >.o
