Top Ten Playlist
Today marks the start of a new challenge between iDigDan and myself, and anyone else who is interested in contributing (Seriously. You got a blog? Jump in!) We thought we’d try something new this month, and instead of a month-long challenge, we are choosing a theme to write and/or post about for a week at a time. This week, the topic is Music, and I thought a nice way to kick off would be with my top ten playlist at the moment.
- Me and Bobby McGee seems to have made a comeback in my head lately. It’s probably the most famous song by Kris Kristofferson, and it has an element that not many American country songs from that decade have: the woman in it is the strong one, and she leaves the man behind, but she doesn’t get condemned for it.
- Just the Other Side of Nowhere is the other Kristofferson song I’ll mention– it’s another rambling song, and that’s probably why I like it. That, and the cute rhyming in the lyrics.
- Boulder to Birmingham from Emmylou Harris fits in here, too. I love the visuals in the lyrics, and it was in an adorable scene on the original Dukes of Hazzard, when Luke gets up in the Boar’s Nest and sings with his kinda-girlfriend.
- Take it Easy by The Eagles ranks up there at the moment. They had me at the “Standing on a corner in Windsor, Arizona” line.
- Travellin’ Soldier is potentially my favourite Dixie Chicks song, and it’s my first choice for singing in the shower on mornings when I’m that way inclined. It’s got an easy tune and a nice little story to tell, and I just happen to like it, I guess!
- Still Alive from the Half Life 2 soundtrack (what? I’ve never even played the game. It is a game, right?) But I was introduced to the song, and it gets stuck in my head like a really annoying nursery rhyme (thanks a lot, Roo!) and please note – it’s not country!
- 99 Red Balloons (The English version) by Nena is one of those classics – even if nobody else has ever heard the English version before. Apparently the group said that it tells a different story in German, but since I don’t understand it, I’ll be content with the warning to society in general that’s in this version.
- Country Flirting by The Sunny Cowgirls is pretty much a trashy Australian Country song, but I love it. I mean, a cute cowboy. Hel-lo?
- Sound the Alarm from The Waifs is one that’s made it back onto my top lists after a few years away – I loved it in grade 10. It’s one of those little reminders to stop and listen to the world every now and then.
- Self Evident by Ani DiFranco fills out my political quotient. It’s an almost 9min long discourse about 9/11 and American politics in general, all wrapped up in a nice parcel of clever word play.
So, only seven of those are Country! What’s on top of your favourites list at the moment? Have you got something that you find yourself listening to over and over, or humming along to without noticing? Have you even heard of any of the songs on my list? Don’t knock it til you try it!

Oh gosh my top ten playlist…well I dotn have a lovely Ipod to tell me what I listen to the most so i’ll have to go by memory…
1. My Heart is the Worst Kind of Weapon by Fall Out Boy: Hmmm how would one describe this song… well with lyrics like “Spent most of last night dragging this lake for the corpses of all my past mistakes” I quess most would describe it as bordering on the emo side. But I have to say I love the lyrics as well as the fact its acoustic.
2. The World Aint Slowing Down by Ellis Paul: ahhh I do love this song and was introduced to it by way of Me, Myself and Irene. It was one of those songs that you hear in a movie and think “I HAVE to fond out what song that is!” I sing it quite often with lines like “Out on the sidewalk, the pigeons do the moonwalk” lol.
3. Burning Love by Elvis Presley: oooh oooh ooh I feel my temperature rising! This is my effervescent happy song and its Elvis – what more do I have to say.
4. Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits: I love the original of this song but I have to say I listen to the cover by the Killers more often. But I really love the story of this song.
5. Your Winter by Sister Hazel: Another sad song but this was practically my theme song of high school adolecent agnst and its still great! I cant remember where I first heard it…could have been 10 Things I Hate About You.
6. Sway by Bic Runga: Ahhhh another High School Classic but this one has memories of summer days spent on the beach with friends
7. Plush by Stone Temple Pilots (Acoustic Version): I listen to the acousitc version way more than the normal one – but I love this song best when my brother plays it(and sings) on the acousitc guitar!!!
8. Tommorow by Silverchair: This is definitely a driving song – summer, driving the midlands, window down, sunglasses on, stero much much too loud!
9. Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard: lol I think this is another song that came out of highschool – but this was one of those cases where I totally loved this band (and this song) way before any of my friends and then it got played heaps on Channel V and all of a sudden everyone loved it – which annoyed me because I liked it first!!!!
10. Back in Black AC/DC: currently my ringtone and what I consider to be the greatest hard rock song of time!!! The riff is just awesome!
so theres my top ten – its kind of a mish mash lol but that just reflects my music taste overall probably!

I’ve got to say none of those songs are even close to being in even my top 1,000 played songs, only 99 Luftballons (as in the German version of red balloons). However I appreciate your unique taste in music.
